What is the title of your book?
Beyond Gruel: Adventures in the Galley and Clear Sailing to Simplicity and Happiness
What is the author’s name?
Bob Witty
About the author
Myers-Briggs classifies me as an introvert. Thomas-Kilman says I am assertive and cooperative. I identify as a combination of artist, scientist and craftsman with an ever-changing fraction on any given day that may exceed 100%. Author combines everything; there are pearls of wisdom from culinary school that apply to information technology management and cybersecurity experiences applicable to kitchens.

What do I do for fun? I cook, sail, take photographs (not pictures and selfies), write, podcast, create culinary videos, get involved in community service events and spend time with my family, friends and pets. I prefer to be known by roles as husband, father, son, brother, family member and friend than any of my professional achievements.

My life has few constants. Change has been a calling, to the extent that I once made a very successful living as a change agent! Formula? Motivation? Logical approaches usually are easy, until emotional mayhem sets in.

I’ve earned an engineering degree, a culinary degree and an MBA, along with an alphabet soup of two, three, four and five letter initials. I admit to a love-hate relationship with technology. In my career I constantly as why? and improve processes; businesses need to be agile and being stuck in paradigms adversely impacts success and profits. In life I have a choice and mixed within my change are decade old preferences – once in a while I am accused of being a creature of habit.

My home is where I am with my wife, pets, and when possible, my adult children. Right now I reside in St. Petersburg, Florida. Most every day is a journey or a quest, not a destination. Tangents are always welcome. The journey and the tangents are what I write about, paraphrase, photograph or find some other way to record. Or just say something about in a tweet or two.

Add a blurb or a short description of what your book is about.
Food, recipes and a sailboat galley are the medium that communicate and encourage creativity, determination, simplicity and happiness. The joy that binds my life together is learning to do the most with less and identifying what that correct “less” is to achieve the desired “more”.

I share my career and life experiences, my culinary skills and my approaches to overcoming obstacles. I emphasize how I made the most out of American Sailing Association bare boat cruising courses. I became a proficient sailor and capable sailboat skipper – and spent time below deck in the galley preparing meals for shipmates and figuring out how I would overcome constraints including space, refrigeration and energy during future voyages.

You too can easily prepare delicious meals that will enhance your voyage, whether at sea or on land. I’ll share with you what sailing, culinary school, information technology and other life experiences can teach you about life, happiness and simplicity. I’ll also share with you what works for me – and I hope that the approaches I take will encourage you to identify your less to achieve more, to choose determination over inaction when difficulty is perceived, and to embrace creativity and diversity as more powerful than intelligence in the misinformation age we live in.

From a Reader:

If you plan to sail and want to enjoy your meals, this is the cookbook your need. For the home chef, this is the cookbook you did not know that you needed. This cookbook offers practical ways to make the most of your cooking supplies to please yourself and your guests. Along the way Mr. Witty mixes in some life experiences from which we all can learn.
Whats your business or organization name?

Who would typically read your book?
This is a review from a person that purchased my book on Amazon. I do not know the person that wrote this:

Beyond Gruel is part cookbook and part life advice. If you plan to sail and want to enjoy your meals, this is the cookbook your need. For the home chef, this is the cookbook you did not know you needed. Mr. Witty draws on his experience from cooking school, restaurants, and years of cooking for family, friends and pets (do not worry – he clearly marks each recipe). The cookbook offers practical ways to make the most of your cooking supplies to please yourself and your guests. Along the way Mr. Witty mixes in some life experiences from which we all can learn.
Describe what you’re looking for in more detail
A book cover that will communicate to the intended audience, which I believe to be people that enjoy cooking and making great food - and will not allow the constraints of a small kitchen to stop them. The book has an "identify the less to achieve the more you desire" theme; keep that in mind. Shy away from anything with computer technology.

Beyond Gruel: Adventures in the Galley should be emphasized
The "and Clear Sailing to Simplicity and Happiness" part of the title can be de-emphasized. I need to communicate that this is a cookbook inspired by cooking in the galley of a sailboat (and other small kitchens, say an RV, a tiny home, etc.). There are elements of life advice and I do go on tangents - part of a book that is meant to be read cover to cover, more than a cookbook that someone would purchase because a handful of recipes appealed to them.
What would you like on the back cover of your book?
  • (1) Blurb

I am open to suggestion. You can find blurbs and additional information on my websites, www.bobwitty.com and www.beyondgruel.com - that may help. You will see the current book cover that was used in the initial printing of the book; this should not be interpreted as an indication of what I want.
