Making art as a career isn’t a piece of cake. Not everyone is born with a skill. But if you have decided your path and have the zeal to constantly learn, nothing can stop you from becoming successful. All you need to do is keep practicing no matter what. Stealing these golden words from our amazing conversation with Jamal Salem. Yes, PrintShop by Designhill brings to you the story of this fantastic artist who has recently started his artistic journey and gave us the opportunity to know more about him.
Jamal Salem is a graphic designer who hails from Jordan and is now living in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He did his Bachelors in Business Administration and started out as a graphic artist in 2018 and today he specializes in illustrations and logos.
He likes to experiment with colors and is passionate about creating cartoon art. To create a piece of art, he takes ideas and inspiration from everywhere and everything that surrounds him.
Jamal is an artist who loves to explore and is always seeking out new learnings. Turning ideas and imagination into reality is what excites him. Art is like an adventure for him and he feels he is in the beginning of this new adventure.
When We Asked About His Love For Graphic Designing, He Said:
‘Hi there, I’m Jamal Salem from Jeddah. I embarked on my artistic journey two years back in 2018 which has been beautiful and very fulfilling. Never thought I would be an artist someday because I am an explorer. I love trying new things. But to be honest somewhere I always had a flare for design. So here I am. Not very new in the field and not that old but my aim is to practice, practice, and practice and become better with my skills. Art is powerful and through my work, I want to express my thoughts and showcase my artistic sensibilities.’
PrintShop: When did you start your artistic journey and how did you realize that this is something that you would like to do?
Jamal: Throughout my life, the hunger to learn new things has always excited me. For quite some time now, I have been following various global artists which over time made me fall in love with designing. Soon after realizing this in 2018, I started to learn and design and haven’t stopped since then.
PrintShop: How do you go about creating a piece of artwork and what tools and techniques do you use?
Jamal: My process of creating an artwork is no different from other artists. It all starts with an idea. So, I first look for one. Then I try to transform it into sketches and draw it on the paper.
This helps me find out how that would look as a design and what would I need to make it complete. Then I finally proceed with the idea and use illustrator to bring it to reality.
PrintShop: What is your source of inspiration and how do you stay creative?
Jamal: If you ask an artist, creativity is everywhere. On the walls, streets, on the cup you sipping your coffee in, the book you’re reading, it’s everywhere.
It depends on how you see it and what you do with it. But thanks to the digital that now when we are locked inside our homes, we can still do what we want.
For getting inspiration and ideas, I keep checking and browsing websites to see what’s trending in the art and design field and what others are doing.
That’s the best way to stay updated because that’s very important for any designer or an artist. Also, I often watch videos on YouTube to find information and ideas.
PrintShop: Did you face any challenges in your artistic journey? If yes, how did you overcome them?
Jamal: Firstly, I would like to say that I love challenges and to me a life without them isn’t perfect and worth living. In my artistic journey so far, I have faced a lot of challenges.
From perfecting a tool to creating unique art every time and dealing with creative blocks, there have been a lot of them. But, I learn from them, practice a lot and move ahead.
We all have faced and are facing some kind of challenges and they will keep knocking our doors in some way or the other, so I feel it’s better to embrace and fight with them instead of pushing them away.
PrintShop: What is the best advice you would like to give and what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as an artist?
Jamal: As I said I have overcome my challenges by practicing more and more. That’s my biggest learning and as an artist I would like to give the same advice to others.
Every day, I make sure to find at least some time to practice a design or a tool. No matter how perfect or how successful you are, practicing is very important. It’s the key to become a pro.
