When We Asked About Her Love For Hand Lettering Started, She Said:
“I’m Nica! I’m a public health college student from the Philippines. Hand lettering is a hobby I enjoy. I own a shop and I recently started my lettering Instagram account. I’ve been enhancing my hand lettering skill since I was in first-year high school from using cheap poster paint and sharpies until I finally ventured into digital art using my iPad and photoshop. I realized it was something that I enjoyed doing when people expressed how they were inspired by my work. And, when I started to enjoy the progress from being an amateur to eventually honing my skills. Comparing my progress is the most fulfilling part of it. I hope to share my art with a larger audience soon and inspire young artists to pursue their passion as well.”
PrintShop: What’s your process of creating a piece of artwork and what tools and techniques do you use?
Nica: I use procreate using my iPad Pro and apple pencil. I first make a rough sketch of how I visualize the work and then outline the letters. Afterward, I apply some color which is personally the hardest part for me. Lastly, I add sparkles because I think it adds more beauty to the work.
PrintShop: How do you find inspiration and stay creative?
Nica: I usually get inspiration from songs and the current events in the world. I get inspiration from some lettering artists on Instagram and Pinterest as well. I make sure to letter about something I’m passionate about and I think it is relevant to share with the public.
PrintShop: Did you face any challenges in your artistic journey? If yes, How did you overcome it?
Nica: Definitely! I tend to be stuck in a creative rut from weeks after using up all my creative energy for one work and it gets frustrating because I’m trying my best to consistently post art on social media. I overcome it by looking for inspiration from some artists on Instagram and I try to letter for a topic I’m genuinely passionate about because that naturally gets the ideas free-flowing.
PrintShop: What is the best advice you’ve gotten as an artist or the most important thing you’ve learned?
Nica: The best advice I can give is to find your style and make art of something you’re passionate about. In my case, I advocate promoting mental health and empowering others which is why I usually letter quotes about it to share with my followers. Throughout my journey, the most important lesson I learned is to let things come naturally and to trust the progress.
When I started lettering at 15 years old, it was frustrating to compare the quality of my work from other hand lettering professionals. However, continuous practice made me realize the importance of improving one’s work.
