The manifestation of grief and insomnia whiles away its time on a ghost of Sliema’s waterfront. Displaced in time, location and mind. The sun is rising behind old Chalet, drawing the silhouette of a backlit forgotten facade on a Mondrian promenade. I wanted to express a feeling, one that removes me from my immediate reality, but keeps me from falling asleep. Ideas and possibilities vibrate into my mind like musical notes, they take on different colours and shapes, but admit in whispers, the time and resources they’d require to become manifest. I am judge and jury, what to execute keeps me awake. When you’re forgotten by the sandman and your night is sleepless, a play of shadows ensues, and my singular objective becomes to guess what belongs in the future. Sometimes, the future meets me halfway. Sleepless nights might alter one’s perception of reality, but they can be fraught with muses. It was a night like this that this painting started.
