What actually is the Mardi Gras event?

Mardi Gras, also called Fat Tuesday, is a 6-week long religious event celebrated before Easter. The legacy of this festival dates back to the 17th – 18th centuries European Carnival festivities.

Its association with New Orleans can be traced back to 1699 when Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville, an explorer, landed in Louisiana. He announced a plot of land as “Pointe du Mardi Gras” soon he realized it was the eve of this very festival.

In 1718, the city of New Orleans was founded adjacent to Pointe du Mardi Gras. By the 1730s, the Mardi Gras parades, along with masquerade balls, became a yearly celebration in the Southern City.  The Mardi Gras festival is observed on Fat Tuesday.

Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday that signifies the beginning of Lent in New Orleans.
