Palm Sunday History and Story

Palm Sunday is the first Sunday before Easter that signifies the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.  It is also the first day of Holy Week. In many churches, the day is associated with blessings and parade of palm leaves.

These ceremonies started taking place in Jerusalem at the end of the 4^th Century. You can find its mention in the travelogue — Peregrinatio Etheriae, also known as The Pilgrimage of Etheria. You can also find the earliest evidence of these ceremonies in the 8^th Century Bobbio Sacramentary in the West.

The ceremony for the blessings of the palms got elaborate during the middle ages. The procession started from one church and went to the one blessed with palms. It returned to the church in which it had originated. Many churches, including the Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Orthodox, Moravian, Anglican, and Reformed practices, distribute palm branches among their worshippers during the Palm Sunday liturgies. People take these palms to their homes and hang them beside their Christian art (crucifixes and crosses). They even keep them in their devotional books and Bibles.  Some of them are also burned the following year, and the ash is saved for the Ash Wednesday.
