The famous image — commonly recognized as Guerrillero Heroico — is said to have been taken on March 5, 1960. The Cuban photographer Alberto Korda clicked it during a funeral service, where Chu Guevara was accompanying Fidel Castro, Simone de Beauvoir, and Jean-Paul Sartre. The image that Korda clicked was initially published in the Revolución — the newspaper of the movement. It stayed there for an extended period. In 1967, an Italian publisher asked for republishing it. He called the publisher "The friend of revolution" and didn't receive any royalties for it.

It’s now clear how this photo ended up in an influential magazine — Paris Match in 1967. At that time, Guevara was supporting communism and fighting for it in Bolivia. In the same year, in October, he was executed. This gave his photograph a new life. Jim Fitzpatrick — an Irish artist, who once had a meeting with Guevara, was stirred by his death. The incident moved him so much that he created a work featuring Korda’s clicked picture against a red background.

From there, Che’s image became a popular means of protest.
