History of Cinco de Mayo

People often confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Independence Day, but that's not the case. It's a day celebrated to mark the single battle in 1862 between Mexico and France's armies. The story goes like this —

Benito Juárez was elected as the president of Mexico in 1861. During his tenure, the country was struggling with financial issues due to prolonged internal strife. This pushed the government into debt. He couldn’t manage the payments of the debts. As a result, Britain, France, and Spain sent their forces to Mexico to recover the payment.

Later on, Britain and Spain withdrew their forces by negotiating with Mexico. But France — led by Napoleon III — saw it as an opportunity to capture the Mexican territory as an attempt to extend its empire.

In late 1862, the French army invaded Veracruz, Mexico driving the then-president Juárez into retreat.

The Battle of Puebla

The French troops were confident that they would be victorious; hence, under General Charles Latrille de Lorencez, they attacked a small town — Puebla in east-central Mexico. Juárez assembled a troop of 2,000 loyal men and commanded them to go to Puebla.

The Mexican Army was vastly outnumbered but poorly supplied. Still, they fought the battle. It lasted from daylight to early evening. The French forces lost about 500 soldiers while the Mexicans lost some 100 troops.

Led by Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza, the Mexican army had a strategic win over the French. General Zaragoza's success in Puebla's battle on May 5th portrayed a tremendous symbolic victory for their government and encouraged the resistance movement.

Due to the continuous pressure from the United States, France withdrew its troops in 1867.

The same year, Juárez’s forces captured and executed Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian — who had been appointed as emperor of Mexico by Napoleon in 1864.

General Zaragoza died of typhoid fever a few months after his historic win. As a tribute to him, Puebla de Los Angeles was renamed.

That’s why Mexican people celebrate the Cinco de Mayo event on May 5th.
