Peace activist — John McConnell in 1969 proposed a day for honoring the Earth, along with the concept of peace. It was first commemorated on March the 21st, 1970, the first day of spring, in the Northern Hemisphere. Later on, the day was sanctioned in an announcement signed by the Secretary-General U Thant written by McConnel at the US. A month later, Gaylord Nelson — a US Senator, proposed the idea of arranging a nationwide environmental discussion on April 22. He appointed Denis Hayes, a young activist, as the National Coordinator. The duo Nelson and Hayes gave the name — "Earth Day." The leadership of Walter Reuther — a labor leader of the United Auto Workers, also proved to be excellent support for the day.

Under the leadership of labor leader Walter Reuther, the United Auto Workers was the most instrumental outside financial and operational supporter of the first Earth Day.

The first Earth Day was held in the United States. But in 1990, Denis Hayes took the event international and organized it in 141 countries. That’s how Earth Day got global.
