3 Basics of Web Design For The Beginners

For a new web designer, the world of web design comes with hundreds of choices and lots of surprises, some of which are more suitable than others. However, this wisdom comes from experience which takes probably many years.

There are 3 Basics of Web Design For  the beginners should follow so that the visitors find the website useful.

1. Visual Hierarchy

Principles of visual hierarchy must be strictly followed by the designer. The hierarchy guides the visitors towards the content that the designer thinks is the most important one. But it is not restricted to text only. Images are also included in this principle. In most cultures, text is read from left-to-right and top-down. So, the text and images should mostly follow this rule.

Another aspect to note is that people like to scan pages much more than reading them on internet. These reading patterns should be followed by the designers in creating web pages. So, they should place important elements such as logo and call to action and images where the reader is expected to scan. The designer is actually signaling to the visitors what is to be read first and next.

2. Right Selection of Fonts

A basic rule to good web designing is to incorporate headlines and body text with appropriate fonts. A wide range of fonts are available to the modern designers. So, it is much easier today to select a font that matches with a website’s business and its message to the visitors.

Choosing the right font is also a lot easier due to free availability of many fonts which were once considered as expensive. This means that high quality fonts can be incorporated without spending much on them. Many sites such as Fontspring, WebINK, Typekit and Fontdeck can be explored to access fee-based font services to find nice fonts.

But consider serif fonts for headlines and sans serif fonts for body text as a rule. Keep the number of fonts on a website to not more than two to three. You must also keep in mind that some font files are enormous and they may slow a website’s load time.

3. Colors of Images

The principles of colors and images are crucial for the website designers to follow when creating a website. Placement of images and colors can make or break any website and so the selection should be on some concrete basis. The designers should not indulge in excessive use of these two elements.

Use of colors is crucial to give a website a simple or complex look. Prefer a simple look by incorporating only two to three colors. But the colors must echo the client’s branding. Colors should also follow visual hierarchy rules that imply that the most important section of the site must be highlighted with a different color.

For images, avoid the use of flash and moving images. Visitors to the websites that have still images. Never use the images for the sake of filling the space.
